Magnetic Ride Control Enhances Attraction of Sierra Denali

DETROIT – Magnetic ride control is an all-new, exclusive feature on the 2015 GMC Sierra Denali, advancing its position as the most refined and technologically advanced truck on the market. It’s the first time the advanced, electronically controlled damping system has been offered on a full-size truck.

Magnetic ride control provides more precise body motion control that correlates with a more refined ride while maintaining payload and trailering capability.
It is standard on all Sierra Denali half-ton models, whether equipped with the standard 5.3L V-8 (355 hp) or the available 6.2L V-8 (420 hp) – the segment’s most powerful engine.

With magnetic ride control, the 2015 Sierra Denali delivers a smoother, more confident driving experience without sacrificing the capabilities customers expect from a GMC truck,” said Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer. “The responsiveness of the system makes this full-size truck feel and drive like a luxury vehicle – and one that’s more comfortable on long trips, especially when trailering.”

The 2015 Sierra Denali’s maximum payload is 1,940 pounds (4WD with 5.3L and 5’8” box) and the max trailering capacity is 9,400 pounds (2WD with 5.3L or 6.2L and 5’8” box).

The third-generation magnetic ride control’s sensors “read” the road every millisecond, triggering damping changes in as little as five milliseconds in electronically controlled shock absorbers that replace conventional mechanical-valve shocks. They’re filled with a magneto-rheological fluid containing minute iron particles, and under the presence of a magnetic charge, the iron particles align to provide damping resistance. Changes in the magnetic charge alter the damping rate of the shocks almost instantly.

Magnetic ride control complements chassis and suspension enhancements introduced across the Sierra 1500 range for 2014:
  • A stronger, fully boxed frame with the main rails and major cross members formed from high-strength steel, providing a rigid base for maximum hauling capability, great noise and vibration isolation and excellent crashworthiness.  The stiff chassis enables more precise tuning of the front and rear suspensions, for a more responsive feel with smoother performance and less vibration and shake, particularly on harsh terrain.
  • A wider rear track and half-inch wider wheels improve that stability and ride smoothness. The geometry also contributes to flatter, more confident-feeling cornering, particularly when hauling heavy cargo or towing.
  • An electric variable-assist power steering system enhances handling and reduces steering effort at low speeds. The variable assistance enhances overall handling with reduced steering effort in parking lots and a higher rate on the highway that provides a more solid, direct and on-center feel.

Denali details
The Sierra Denali – offered exclusively as a crew cab – delivers unique design cues and exclusive features, starting with a signature chrome grille, projector-style headlamps with LED signature daytime running lights, unique 20-inch chrome wheels, a polished stainless steel exhaust outlet and body-color front and rear bumpers.

Denali-specific interior details include script on the bright door sills and embossed into the front seats, and real aluminum trim. The high-tech cabin also features an exclusive eight-inch-diagonal Customizable Driver Display that can show relevant settings, audio and navigation information in the instrument panel, as well as a Bose audio system, heated and cooled leather front bucket seats, a heated steering wheel, front and rear park assist and a power sliding rear window with defogger.

Sierra Denali’s standard eight-inch Color Touch navigation radio with IntelliLink, located above the center console, serves as the main hub for Bluetooth-connected phones and portable devices connected through five standard USB ports.

Enhanced connectivity and convenience for 2015 include a new Text Messaging Alerts feature for smartphone users with Bluetooth profile (M.A.P.), which reads incoming texts through the vehicle’s speakers, and Siri Eyes Free for iPhone iOS 6 and iOS 7 users. They’re voice-controlled to help keep phones safely stowed and hands on the wheel.

Also new is OnStar with 4G LTE and standard built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, providing a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the vehicle is on and comes with a three-month/3GB data trial.

The Sierra Denali is backed by GMC Pro Grade Protection, with two years of scheduled maintenance, a three-year/36,000-miles bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

A heritage of distinction
As GMC’s ultimate expression of its professional grade philosophy and the best of its capabilities, the Denali nameplate has become synonymous with performance, refinement and technology. It represents more than 20 percent of all GMC retail sales and is offered on Terrain, Acadia, Yukon and Sierra models.

All Denali models are distinguished on the exterior by a signature chrome grille and exclusive interior trim. They are also often technology leaders for GMC, with features such as magnetic ride control offered exclusively on Sierra Denali and Yukon Denali.

“Denali has earned a reputation for uncompromising refinement with capability after more than 15 years of premium vehicles that take truck and SUV ownership experiences to higher levels,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing. “It’s a symbol that embodies the finest of GMC’s engineering, technology and attention to detail.”

More than 675,000 Denali models have been sold since the introduction of the 1999 Yukon Denali. In fact, Denali models alone outsell the entire product lines of some premium auto brands such as Land Rover, Jaguar and Porsche.

GMC has manufactured trucks since 1902, with innovation and engineering excellence built into all GMC vehicles. The brand is evolving to offer more fuel-efficient trucks and crossovers, including the Terrain small SUV and Acadia crossover. GMC’s highest-volume vehicle, the Sierra pickup, is the most powerful light-duty pickup on the market, and the first full-size pickup to receive the highest-possible five-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration changed its New Car Assessment Program for the 2011 model year. Details on all GMC models are available at http://www.gmc.com/, on Twitter at @thisisgmc or at http://www.facebook.com/gmc.

Is a Half-Ton Heavy-Duty Pickup Coming?

Half-ton pickup trucks have been getting stronger in terms of frame strength and towing capacity for the past several years. These improvements are pushing the limits on what a traditional half-ton truck is built for. Also, the substantial growth in three-quarter-ton towing capacity is creating a product gap. As a result, will we see more heavy-duty half-ton pickups in the market soon?

The growing use of high-grade steel has created a generation of pickups with stronger frames. This strength combined with new engine improvements leads to half-ton trucks being able to tow a substantial amount of weight. Throw in a larger engine, provide more suspension, beef it up and add better braking in these half-tons and you basically have the same specs of a three-quarter-ton truck from just a decade ago. This type of heavy-duty half-ton is perfect for the occasional hauler who doesn't need/want the larger HD. It also makes a lot of sense for Toyota and Nissan.
Heavy-Duty Versus Half-Ton

For the last few years, HD trucks have been increasing their towing capacity. The latest example of this is the new towing leader, the 2015 Ford F-450 with a maximum towing capacity of 31,200 pounds. In 2005 the same truck had a maximum tow rating of 16,700 pounds.

While, yes, the half-ton and three-quarter-ton segments are substantially different, there is a growing gap between the towing capacities where an HD half-ton could make sense. See the chart below.

Beefed-Up Half-Ton

Let's state the obvious right here: A three-quarter-ton truck is vastly different from a half-ton. In most cases, the frame and parts are more akin to a locomotive than a car. This means manufacturers need dedicated production lines and parts suppliers to build them. This extra expense could be reduced with a half-ton HD package.

That means manufacturers like Toyota and Nissan that offer only light-duty pickups could bring a heavy-duty package option to their half-ton trucks. These trucks would have:
  •     Stronger rear section of the frame
  •     Larger axles and springs
  •     Upgraded driveshaft parts
  •     Tempered transmission and axle gears
In fact, the HD version could share the same production line with its half-ton counterpart and thus be cheaper to build. This would easily translate to more profits. Also, from a marketing/product lineup point of view, it essentially would provide those import players with more rugged-truck, work-truck credibility.

Toyota, Nissan HD Truck Plans

Last year an insider said Toyota was working on an HD half-ton. The speculation is the Tundra is basically already overbuilt and by making a few changes, Toyota could easily add an HD half-ton to its lineup. Plus, with Toyota's production limitations, it could add it to the San Antonio plant without making a huge investment. Lastly, with the Tundra's success/failure (depends on how you see it in the half-ton market) Toyota wouldn't have to try to compete in the competitive HD segment.

Nissan could also follow suit for the same reasons. Like Toyota, Nissan doesn't have the manufacturing facilities Ford, GM and Ram do. Plus, with the Titan getting the Cummins diesel it seems like it could be easily adapted as a heavy-duty hauler. This would bolster Nissan's reasoning for adding the Cummins diesel in the first place, and provide it with a unique item in a hot part of the truck market.

With a booming truck market and profits to be made, it seems increasingly likely that Toyota and Nissan would offer a product like this sooner rather than later.

The increased payload and towing means small/light recreational vehicle owners and toy towers (boats, all-terrain vehicles and others) would jump on it. Additionally, if those truckmakers are smart about pricing and keep it below average three-quarter-ton pricing, they could build a nice niche for themselves. Add to that some cab and or unique bed lengths, and the pool of new truck buyers would only get bigger.

Building a product to meet customers' changing needs, filling a gap in a limited lineup and steering clear of the Detroit Three's three-quarter-ton and one-ton competition seems like a no-brainer for Toyota and Nissan. Unfortunately, neither of these pickup players is good at taking big risks. However, not stepping into this arena may be an even bigger risk if they plan to be around for the long haul.

Diesel Pickups Gain in Popularity

Ever wonder which state last year had the most pickup trucks with a diesel engine under the hood? Did you ever think about which state — in 2013 — had the highest percentage of vehicles on the road that have a bed at one end and a combustion ignition setup inside the engine block? Well, the Diesel Technology Forum just released its 2013 statistical report, which provides all those numbers for 2013 and much more.

According to the DTF, a larger percentage of total drivers have diesel pickup trucks in the central north region than anywhere else in the U.S. Specifically, Montana leads the way because of energy exploration and mining operations, as do all of its neighbors. As to the leader of diesel pickups, it probably comes as no surprise that the state that has the most pickups in the U.S. also has the most diesel-equipped pickups: Texas, with almost 750,000.

Other interesting tidbits include the fact that West, Southwest and Midwest states (like California, Arizona and Illinois) are experiencing the fastest turbo-diesel pickup growth, while Northeast states (like Vermont, Delaware and New Hampshire) are growing much faster than ever as well.

Check out these facts and more in the full report by clicking here.

The top 10 states with most diesel registrations in 2013:
  1. Texas, 747,760
  2. California, 478,847
  3. Florida, 243,887
  4. Washington, 202,384
  5. Colorado, 174,337
  6. Pennsylvania, 170,274
  7. Oregon, 161,007
  8. North Carolina, 159,679
  9. Georgia, 157,332
  10. Ohio, 157,005

Spied: 2016 Ford Super-Duty

We've been working with our spy shooters for the last few months regarding Ford's next-generation Super Duty pickups and, based on how camouflaged the trucks have been, whether they will include the same type of aluminum body panels on the new F-150 that's been getting so much attention. Here are some photos, a video and a note they just sent us.

"We have conclusive proof that Ford is doubling down on its aluminum trucks, going the F-150 route on its all-new Super Duty pickups."

Will It Magnet?

"A slew of Super Duty prototypes have been testing in the Rocky Mountains, and an F-350 dualie pulling a fifth wheel [was] parked for the day, leaving its truck bed uncovered and exposed. We decided that it was time to make a little introduction: 'Magnet, meet Super Duty. Super Duty, say hello to Magnet. Let's see if you two are attracted to each other.' The end result is captured on video and shows that the magnet exhibits ZERO attraction to the prototype surfaces — even its exposed metal — suggesting that the next Super Duty is following the F-150's lead and going aluminum.

"Look at our textual breakdown of the video material for the full context of its contents. In addition to the video, we have compiled a megaset of photos showing the Super Duty prototypes testing in a wide variety of body configurations, including crew cab, super cab, regular cab and crew cab chassis cab. We also have a small glimpse at the Super Duty's interior through a long lens."
Video Breakdown

"The Super Duty prototype subjected to the magnet was 80 percent covered, with its bed uncovered due to the fifth-wheel trailer that remained attached while the test truck was parked. We placed the magnet over various sections of the covered truck and then reached an uncovered portion, clad only in marine vinyl camouflage near the rear wheel arch. The magnet showed no attraction to the prototype, but since portions of the prototype were covered with a car cover, the video is not 100 percent conclusive. We did some tests after the fact, applying the magnet to a current steel-bodied F-250 and found that the magnet would still show attraction even when a 1/4-inch piece of foam core board was placed between the truck and the magnet. This helps alleviate some concerns over the covered portion of the prototype and its reaction to the magnet.

"In another test, we placed some marine vinyl similar to automotive camouflage between the magnet and a current F-250. Here, it stuck like glue. On a portion of the Super Duty prototype that wasn't obscured by the car cover, the section covered only in vinyl camouflage exhibited no magnetism, which is highly suggestive of aluminum body panels.

"Finally, we placed the magnet against that truck bed's bare metal, and still, there was absolutely no magnetic effect. It's here that we can say conclusively that Ford is using aluminum in a large portion of its next-generation Super Duty prototypes. If it is using aluminum here, in the key punishment point of a heavy-duty work truck, it stands to reason that aluminum is being used throughout the rest of the Super Duty prototypes — just as it's used on the 2015 Ford F-150."

Majority of Pickups Could Be Aluminum by 2025

Depending on who you talk to, the idea of making pickup trucks out of aluminum is an idea that could catch on with truckmakers, resulting in as many as 7 out of 10 trucks being made from aluminum during the next few decades.

According to The Detroit News, marketing research firm Ducker Worldwide is predicting that once the 2015 Ford F-150 debuts and works out the bugs with dealerships and the auto repair industry, other truckmakers will likely to follow suit. In fact, a recent study by Ducker suggests that by 2025 as many as 7 in 10 pickup trucks made for the U.S. could be made completely or substantially from the lighter alloy.

The study was commissioned by the Aluminum Transportation Group, an organization dedicated to promoting the use of aluminum in new production areas. The Detroit News noted that members of the Steel Market Development Institute (you can guess where their biases lay) think more advances are likely to be made with less-expensive advanced high-strength steels. What a surprise.

All of this speculation about the use of more lightweight materials is motivated by the aggressive federal fuel-efficiency targets full-size pickups (those with a gross vehicle weight rating less than 8,500 pounds) will have to meet in the near future. Now that Ford is pushing the industry, it makes sense that others are likely to follow. Making vehicles lighter will naturally help improve a vehicle's EPA fuel economy numbers, but there are many other ways pickup truck makers can help their average fuel economy as well. Look for more less conventional solutions coming down the road, as well.

Missan Debuts Global 2015 Nissan NP300

Nissan debuted the 12th generation of its midsize global pickup truck, the 2015 NP300 Navara. The all-new exterior and redesigned interior is a huge leap forward for the NP300 as it competes with vehicles like the Volkswagen Amarok, Ford Ranger and a host of other midsize work trucks in the highly competitive global market. From Asia to South America to the Middle East, the small global Nissan pickup is popular in just about every country, offering toughness at an economical price. This newest version attempts to inject some much-needed styling as well.

Whether this new Navara offers any hints about what the next Titan or Frontier will look like is anyone's guess, but many of the key assets and core values the design engineers speak about in the videos would play quite well in the U.S. market.

The new Navara will be offered with two engines (one gas, one turbo-diesel), with the TD engine offered in two power-rating configurations. The gas engine is a 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder, while the DOHC turbo-diesel is also same size, but its most powerful version offers 188 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 335 pounds-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. The new vehicle is said to get 11 percent better fuel economy than the vehicle it is replacing. The Navara will offer a six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic transmission with a ton of electronically controlled safety features like stability control, an active limited slip, hill descent and hill start assist.

2015 Ford F-150 Seen on the Streets

Like an encounter with the elusive Bigfoot, we got a big surprise when we found ourselves face-to-face with the brand-new aluminum-bodied Ford F-150, due at dealerships toward the end of the year. In the midst of our 2014 Ultimate Heavy-Duty Challenge in and around Ann Arbor, Mich., area, we had the chance to see a fully loaded 2015 Ford F-150 4x4 Lariat Sport.

Clearly this was an early build vehicle, out of its cage long before any journalists will have a chance to get behind the wheel, but we were allowed to touch it and take photos in the protected area behind our hotel. Build quality looks impressive, and the level of detail and technology in the truck is impressive.

We spent a lot of time scrolling through the multilayered information screen (between the speedometer and tachometer) where the data is sorted like a filing cabinet, clicking on tabs and lists to set and access all sorts of numbers and settings. The towing mirrors have tremendous capability, and cameras embedded into the mirrors provide the new half-ton with the segment's first 360-degree capabilities. Also, the front EcoBoost air intake is equipped with automatic shutters that allow the engine to both cool and warm up faster for better efficiency, which should directly translate into better fuel economy. Finally, and we thought this one needed more consideration, the trailer brake controller is buried far under the dash — making it even more difficult to see or grab easily than in the 2014 model.

No doubt we'll be seeing more of the new F-150 as more of the pickup trucks come out of the Dearborn Truck Plant. From what we understand, the trucks won't get to dealerships until the fourth quarter of the year so this could be the best time to get a good deal on a current-generation F-150. Ford will have to be careful with inventory as it makes the changeover and dealers wind down their current inventory. A misplayed hand in the early stages could rob Ford of any new-truck momentum as it heads into 2015.

Custom Rack-it Truck Rack for a Ford F-150 Extended Cab

What a sharp looking pickup! We built this custom rack for a Ford F150 with a Leer Camper Shell. The customer requested we use a woven wire style mesh system all the way up and down the cargo area of the rack.

We normally do not stock this material, but we were able to source it out quickly and get this rack on the customers truck. This 3000 Series model was powder coated gloss black and really looks great on this customers rig.

Notice the detail in the way the woven steel mesh is attached to the pipe. Every Connection is welded and smoothed -out. Also notice the extra middle, longitudinal pipe support.

Nissan Truck Teases New Global Pickup

Both the Nissan Frontier compact pickup truck and its full-size brother, the Titan, are getting long in the tooth. The Titan hasn't had a significant update since its introduction more than a decade ago, and the Frontier is nearly as old — the current generation dates back to 2004, with a mild face-lift in 2009. With the Detroit Three reloading their pickup arsenal this year in both full-size and compact form, the time is more than right for a new round of Nissan trucks, and we've gotten our first peek at what may come.

Nissan's global organization has Tweeted a teaser image of a new pickup truck that will be revealed on June 11. While there is no official word on what this truck will be, we have a few clues and our money is on it being the new Nissan Navara. Nissan North America's official statement is that the Tweet released by an overseas division of Nissan is not an indication of a new Frontier for the U.S. market — but unless Nissan has some special plan for the next Frontier (like making it off of the bigger Titan platform), what we see under the tarp is most likely what we'll see in local showrooms. Whatever the truck is, it's almost certainly not the new Titan — that's a mostly North American-specific model and isn't due to be revealed until sometime next year.

Have a look at the photo and accompanying video (which features Nissan's compact pickups, another hint that this is probably the Navara), and stay tuned on June 11 to see what's coming from the Japanese automaker.

2015 F-150 Wins Ford’s First- Ever Yankee Cup for Trucks

  • With help from Massachusetts Institute of Technology engineering faculty, the New England Motor Press Association awarded the 2015 Ford F-150, with more than 100 patents, the Yankee Cup
  • The Yankee Cup is a technology award recognizing an automotive feature, system or vehicle that significantly makes driving safer, more cost efficient or more enjoyable
  • From its truck bed to LED lights, new F-150 recognized by judges as tougher, smarter and more capable
The new 2015 F-150 claimed Ford Motor Company’s first-ever Yankee Cup for trucks, a technology award bestowed by the New England Motor Press Association, in conjunction with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at an annual awards dinner Thursday.

Selected with input from MIT engineering faculty, the New England Motor Press Association’s annual Yankee Cup goes to an automotive feature, system or vehicle that significantly makes driving safer, more cost efficient or more enjoyable.

“It is an honor to accept this award on behalf of the team behind the all-new Ford F-150,” said Pete Reyes, F-150 chief engineer. “With the 2015 F-150, Ford is teaching the world how to build a next-generation truck, and the more than 100 patents the F-150 team has filed for technologies prove these Ford engineers and designers are innovative leaders in the automotive industry.”

“When reviewing all the entries for the Yankee Cup, we couldn’t help but notice the F-150 is loaded with innovation,” said Craig Fitzgerald, New England Motor Press Association president. “We all know this vehicle is Built Ford Tough, but now it is both tough and smart – helping to redefine the light-duty pickup for the next generation.”

Ford has filed more than 100 patents on the all-new Ford F-150, making it the most patented truck in company history.

Innovative features include:
  • LED side-mirror spotlights allow customers to illuminate the side of the vehicle for tasks ranging from setting up a campsite to changing a tire
  • Remote tailgate release automatically lowers the tailgate with the push of a button on the key fob – a pickup truck first
  • Ford’s pioneering tailgate step has been completely reengineered so that it fully integrates into the tailgate, making it virtually invisible when not in use. The tailgate drops down into position in one easy motion. The grab handle is now housed inside the tailgate, keeping the inner surface of the tailgate uniformly flat
  • BoxLink cargo management system includes lockable die-cast aluminum tie-down cleats. It provides a unique interface to the box for improved flexibility and organization, as well as additional tie-down locations. Segment-first cargo ramps are available that stow on the sides of the box and can be mounted quickly on the tailgate to enable easy loading of ATVs, motorcycles or mowers
Segment firsts include a 360-degree camera view, integrated loading ramps stowed in the pickup bed, 400-watt power outlets inside the cab and segment-first LED headlights.
Additionally, the new Ford F-150 uses the latest high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloys to form the body and cargo box on top of a high-strength steel frame.

The aluminum is heat-treated in an oven using a method developed by Ford engineers that nearly doubles the strength of the metal. A similar approach is used in aerospace applications, but Ford is the first to use and petition to patent this methodology for the auto industry.
